* Please Note: All cylinders are sourced from several manufacturers and may vary in height as much as + / – several inches. We apologize, but we are unable to take special requests at this time.

The Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR; 49 CFR Parts 171 – 180) do not contain specific design requirements for cylinder valves. They have not adopted the OPD requirements into the HMR. It is contained in the National Fire Protection Association’s publication “NFPA 58, Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code,” 1998 edition. NFPA is not a governmental agency; however, many states have adopted the NFPA Code as state law. You should contact your state or local government agency to find out if your state requires propane cylinders to conform to the OPD requirement prior to purchase.

Fast Shipping

Gas Cylinder Source knows you need your product now, which is why we offer super-fast shipping and even have an express option. We also recognize shipping charges can play a significant role in a purchase, and that is why we do everything we can to keep shipping rates as low as possible. We do not inflate the price of our products as a mask for free shipping offers. Our product prices are set at the best pricing we can offer, and the amount charged for shipping covers the shipping and delivery of your order. We believe this transparency in costs is the best way to keep you well-informed while receiving the best price available.

Calculate Your Shipping
You can calculate your shipping charge in just a few quick steps:

  • Add your desired product(s) to the shopping cart.
  • Navigate to the Shopping Cart page.
  • Click the "Calculate Shipping" link in the cart totals section and enter your Country, State, City, & Zip Code, then select the 'Update' button.

Residential vs Commercial Address
Initial shipping charges calculated in the Shopping Cart are figured using a residential shipping rate unless you have previously entered a commercial address in the ship-to field during a previous checkout session. Deliveries to a commercial address are typically cheaper than deliveries to a residential address and will be reflected on the checkout page once the full address has been entered and the system confirms it is a commercial address.

LTL Freight Shipments
For larger freight or custom orders, we ask you to allow for a 7-10 business day lead time for product preparation and shipping set up. A customer service representative may reach out to you requesting additional information such as liftgate needs, receiving hours, or other order details. Once your order has shipped, you will receive tracking information. LTL Freight Costs will be calculated on the day of shipment and may vary from your initial estimate, resulting in additional charges.

Time to Ship
Product is shipped from Minnesota. Transport time is usually between 1 and 5 days. Orders typically ship out the following business day after the order has been placed. Larger orders, and especially those going via a contracted freight service, may take additional time.

Order Tracking
Once your order has been shipped, an email will be sent to you with tracking details as well as a link you can use to track your shipment and find estimated delivery information.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

▼ Is a propylene cylinder the same as a propane tank?

No, and the difference matters before you buy. Propylene and propane are different fuel gases: propylene burns hotter, which is why it is favored for brazing and some cutting work, and torches and tips are often rated for one or the other. This is a propylene cylinder. If your equipment is set up for propane, check its rating before switching fuel.

▼ Can I put propane in this cylinder instead of propylene?

Cylinder service is set by the supplier and by the valve and cylinder specification, so this is a question for your filler rather than an assumption to make. Do not switch a cylinder between fuel gases without confirming it is approved for that service. Using the wrong gas for your torch can also affect flame characteristics and safety.

▼ Why choose an aluminum cylinder over steel?

Aluminum is lighter for the same capacity and does not rust, which is the main reason it is chosen for marine and outdoor mounting where a steel bottle would corrode. The trade is usually cost. For a cylinder that lives on a boat or on the outside of a vehicle, the corrosion resistance is the deciding factor.

▼ Is this cylinder suitable for marine and boating use?

Yes, that is its intended use. The high-strength aluminum alloy resists the corrosion that quickly attacks steel cylinders in a salt environment, and the open handle design is built for secure year-round mounting rather than occasional carrying. Always mount and vent a fuel cylinder on a vessel to the applicable marine standards.

▼ What is the open handle design for?

It provides a fixed mounting point so the cylinder can be strapped or bracketed in place permanently, rather than being carried and set down like a grill bottle. On a boat or an off-road vehicle that matters more than portability. It also gives a secure grip when the cylinder is moved.

▼ What does "recertified" mean on this cylinder?

It means the cylinder was inspected and requalified by an authorized facility and passed, then returned to service with a current date stamped on it. It meets the same standard a new cylinder must meet, or it is scrapped. The difference from new is cost and cosmetic condition.

▼ Does it have an OPD valve, and why does that matter?

Yes, it is fitted with an OPD, an Overfill Prevention Device. United States refill stations will refuse to fill a cylinder in the sizes that require an OPD if it does not have one, so this is a practical requirement rather than an optional feature. It limits the fill level to leave the correct vapor space.

▼ How many gallons is a 6 lb cylinder?

Roughly 1.4 gallons, since propane and propylene weigh in the region of 4.2 pounds per gallon. Cylinders are rated by pounds of capacity rather than tank volume, which is why a “6 gallon” tank would be a much larger vessel. Check the pound rating rather than searching by gallons.

▼ What are the dimensions and weight of a 6 lb aluminum cylinder?

Height, diameter and empty weight are listed in the specifications on this page. As a class, a 6 lb aluminum bottle is genuinely light and compact, which is the point of the aluminum construction. Check the listed height against your mounting bracket.

▼ Does this cylinder ship filled?

No. All cylinders ship empty for transport safety and must be filled before first use. Take it to a supplier who handles propylene and can fill by weight. Never attempt to transfer fuel gas between cylinders yourself.

▼ Where can a propylene cylinder be refilled?

Not every propane dealer stocks propylene, so it is worth confirming locally before buying. Welding and industrial gas suppliers are more likely to handle it than a general propane exchange point. Some suppliers operate an exchange rather than filling your own cylinder.

▼ What is a 6 lb propylene cylinder used for?

Typical uses are portable brazing and soldering, marine and boating applications, and outdoor or off-road setups where a light corrosion-resistant bottle is wanted. Propylene’s higher flame temperature suits brazing work that propane struggles with. The small size favours portability over run time.

▼ How should a fuel gas cylinder be stored and transported?

Transport it upright and secured, and never leave a fuel cylinder in a closed vehicle or in direct sun. Store it outdoors or in a properly ventilated space, upright, away from ignition sources and building openings. Keep the valve fully closed when not in use, including when empty.
